Hello to TheMillenialNews readers and welcome to our new segment: Sports. Some of you have been asking for this, and we have finally answered. We hope you enjoy. What a better way to start us off than a brief review of the Afcon. We shall look at it’s history and a review of the semis. So buckle up dear millennials and let us begin.

Afcon is Africa’s most renowned football (soccer) tournament. The Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) organizes the tournament, which is played by national teams. The inaugural Africa Cup of Nations was first contested in Khartoum, Sudan, in February 1957, with Egypt defeating the host nation to win the Abdel Aziz Abdallah Salem Trophy, named after the trophy’s benefactor, the first CAF president. In 1978, when Ghana became the first country to win the tournament thice, the trophy was given to them permanently. When Cameroon won its third title since 1978, the African Unity Cup was granted to them permanently in 2000.

This year’s Afcon is being hosted by Cameroon and has been held in 5 cities across the country, with Yaounde hosting the opening ceremony and is also set to host the finals. It began with the group stage where 24 teams were reduced to 16, with a few surprises thrown in for good measure. Algeria, the defending champion, and Ghana, the traditional powerhouse, failed to make it out of the group stage. However, Burkina Faso shocked us by beating Tunisia and making it to the semi-finals where they faced Senegal on Wednesday.

This was an interesting game. Senegal beat Burkina Faso 3-1 to reach their second successive Afcon final, thanks to Sadio Mane’s goal. Despite being denied a penalty two times before the halftime by VAR, Abdou Diallo and Bamba Dieng scored in a six-minute span to put Senegal in command of the game. Burkina Faso had a chance when Blati Toure retaliated and scored a goal with seven minutes left, but Mane surged away and finished well to seal the victory.

The other match was between Egypt and the hosts Cameroon where after a goalless 120 minutes, Egypt defeated Cameroon 3-1 on penalties to go to the finals against Senegal.

Cameroon had controlled the first half, with Michael Ngadeu-Ngadjui hitting the post in the best of the chances, but they let the tie slip away from them as Egypt grabbed control. Egypt will be looking for a record-extending eighth trophy as they face Senegal in the finals. Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, Liverpool teammates, will face off in this match. This will surely be an interesting game. Share with us on the comment section who you think is most likely to take the cup home
