If you’ve ever wondered if you’re drinking because your Dad is drinking you are in the right place. πŸ€”πŸ€”

Let’s find out more.

Alcoholism can be defined as a chronic disease caused by compulsive and uncontrollable consumption of alcoholic beverages, leading to addiction and deterioration in health and social functioning.

There’s a whole list of the diseases associated with alcoholics;

  • Alcoholic cirrhosis
  • Alcoholic pancreatitis,
  • Cancers of the upper GI tract and the liver,
  • Cardiovascular diseases,
  • Breast cancer,
  • Diabetes
  • Fetal alcohol syndrome.

Consumption of formal (recorded) alcohol that includes beer, spirits and wines accounts for 56 per cent of the drinking population while informal sources (unrecorded alcohol) such as chang’aa and a host of other illicit drinks account for 44 per cent.

Research indicated that the chances of inheriting alcoholism by children are 50%. This research also included adopted children who had alcoholic biological parents.

Evidence has shown that alcoholism is a complex genetic condition involving majorly two enzymes: aldeyde dehydrogenase 2(ALDH2) and alcohol dehydrogenase 1B(ADH1B). These two enzymes are responsible for metabolism of alcohol in the body.

Each individual has different levels of these two enzymes and they affect not only alcohol dependence but also the levels of alcohol consumption. These two are coded for by genes on chromosomes hence the genetic variations and inheritance associated with alcoholics.
